Medicaid Policies for Alcohol SBI Reimbursement

    Get PDF
The purpose of this report was to review existing reimbursement policies by state Medicaid agency, including the District of Columbia (D.C.), in order to understand similarities and differences associated with financial compensation for alcohol screening and brief intervention (SBI) services. Alcohol SBI is an evidence-based practice known to help reduce atrisk alcohol consumption among patients who drink too much. 1 Although alcohol SBI was designed to be a population-based approach to address unhealthy alcohol consumption, its current utilization is limited. 2 Implementation of the practice into routine clinical care remains a challenge at the health system level even with support from federal resources (e.g., SBIRT: Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment). One way to encourage the uptake of alcohol SBI/SBIRT among providers is to ensure that the service is reimbursable by third-party payers. However, reimbursement opportunities vary by state and payer, and in some locations are non-existent. Information about the current status of policies will assist in the development of policies and incentives to encourage healthcare providers and systems to submit claims for alcohol SBI/SBIRT and potentially increase the routine uptake of the service in clinical careCenters for Disease Control and Prevention Cooperative Agreement Number DD00114

Changing the Mindset: A Look at Current Literacy Practices and How These Are Failing Boys

The special education population in schools in the United States shows a significant disproportionality between male and female students. Often special education referrals are made due, in part, to student underperformance in reading and basic literacy skills. Using past studies regarding best practices for literacy instruction, gender studies, and special education, the current study looks to understand what teachers can do to eliminate the inequality in special education referrals between genders in school-aged children. Results suggest that female students begin school with a head start to their male counterparts, and because of this, typically do well in the earlier grades in which literacy skills are emphasized. However, further research suggests differences in behavioral and societal ideals create this differentiation

All quiet on the disillusioned front : the effects of World War II on American literature

    Get PDF
World War II created a noticeable cultural shift across the globe, the effects of which are still being felt today. What needs to be addressed is that an entire ocean separated one of the major contributors to the war—the United States—from the vast majority of the physical carnage. Soldiers had to go overseas, and citizens who remained at home were left with little more than propaganda and their own imaginations as means of interacting with the war. As a result, the United States had a remarkably different post-war experience than several European countries, and with a particularly different post-war cultural psychology. Because of social and geographical factors, the trauma inflicted on the United States by World War II had more of an underlying effect on the collective American conscious than had appeared in European countries, which manifested in some of the great literary works of the time

Argumentation for Critical Heterogenous Political Discussions: Constructing a Rebuttal

    Get PDF
This activity seeks to explain to undergraduate students how to craft a proper attack and defense in argumentation and debate, persuasion, or political communication courses. The activity teaches students 1) the parts of a basic argument structure and 2) how to construct a rebuttal using a basic argument structure. Students will argue against their true political typology by selecting an opposing typology from the Pew Research Typology Quiz. Broadly, this exercise is designed to encourage students to engage in dialogues with people who disagree with their political positionality. Specifically, the activity accomplishes this by teaching students the value of basic argument structure in political discussions and is an extension of Zarefsky’s work on teaching the practice of argumentation. Additionally, it incorporates recent scholarship on how post-pandemic online learning has impacted higher education and political polarization. As such, this activity can be used for in-person or online asynchronous modalities

Reconsolidation of episodic memories:a subtle reminder triggers integration of new information

    Get PDF
Recent demonstrations of “reconsolidation” suggest that memories can be modified when they are reactivated. Reconsolidation has been observed in human procedural memory and in implicit memory in infants. This study asks whether episodic memory undergoes reconsolidation. College students learned a list of objects on Day 1. On Day 2, they received a reminder or not, and then learned a second list. Memory for List 1 was tested immediately on Day 2 (Experiment 2) or on Day 3 (Experiment 1). Although the reminder did not moderate the number of items recalled from List 1 on either day, subjects who received a reminder incorrectly intermixed items from the second list when recalling List 1 on Day 3. Experiment 2 showed that this effect does not occur immediately and thus is time-dependent. The reminder did not affect memory for List 2 on Day 3 (Experiment 3), demonstrating that modification occurred only for the original memory (List 1). The study demonstrates the crucial role of reminders for the modification of episodic memory, that reconsolidation of episodic memory is time-dependent, and, in contrast to previous reconsolidation findings, that reconsolidation is also a constructive process, one that supports the incorporation of new information in memory

Evaluating Corporate Social Responsibility using Corporate Social Performance: A case of the Niger Delta, Nigeria

    Get PDF
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is generally viewed as corporations moving beyond their primary commitment to their shareholders to contribute towards a better society. However, the extent to which the desired positive impact is felt by beneficiaries differ in relation to their needs. This study identifies corporate social performance theory as being relevant in evaluation the CSR programmes and activities of the multinational oil companies in the Niger delta region of Nigeria. The study assesses the level of commitment of the oil companies to the needs of their host communities through CSR, and how morally acceptable their CSR policies have been to the local communities. This is an exploratory research which obtained data mainly from primary sources. Using twenty-eight semi structured interviews obtained from three host communities in the Niger delta region, Nigeria. Finding suggest that the oil multinational in this region have engaged in various form of CSR programmes and activities. However, the success of any CSR initiative is positively related to an interpretation of the motives behind such gesture by beneficiaries and not merely financial contributions.

    Tableau evacuation and webs

Webs are certain planar diagrams embedded in disks. They index and describe bases of tensor products of representations of sl2\mathfrak{sl}_2 and sl3\mathfrak{sl}_3. There are explicit bijections between webs and certain rectangular tableaux. Work of Petersen-Pylyavskyy-Rhoades (2009) and Russell (2013) shows that these bijections relate web rotation to tableau promotion. We describe the analogous relation between web reflection and tableau evacuation.Comment: 10 pages, exposition improved thanks to helpful feedbac
